Understanding Carrier Screening Results

Genetic test results can be complex to understand. The Lumi team is here to help you all the way but just to demystify what it's all about we have explained how the results work.
Results can be reported in a number of ways such as - negative result, positive result, high risk, low risk result, inconclusive, variant and mutation.
Understanding your genetics, and the results you obtain from them, will empower you to make informed decisions regarding your health, family planning and your lifestyle.
It is important to acknowledge that each person is unique, and as such, how this information is used will be relevant to the individual. Discussing your results with a genetic counsellor can help you process what the result means to you and your family, and can help you understand what treatment and support options are relevant to you.
Negative Result or Low Risk Result:
This means nothing unusual was found in your genes. You probably won't need more tests for this.
Positive Result or High Risk Result:
This shows a change in your DNA, called a variant or mutation. It might mean you carry a rare genetic condition or have a gene that increases the risk of an inherited condition. This result might not affect your health but could impact family planning. If you get a positive result, talking to a genetic counsellor is a good idea. They can explain how it affects you, your family, and what steps to take next.
Inconclusive Result:
Sometimes, the test can't give a clear answer. This could happen if there's not enough information in the sample or if the DNA variation is not understood. If the result is unclear because of insufficient DNA, you might need to do the test again. If it's due to a genetic variation that's not understood, talking to a genetic counsellor or doctor might help figure out what to do next.
